Dislocation I

Gypsum gauze cast

We all constitutively live in the in-betweenness formed by the obstacles in the city landscapes; the spaces are split, cut and divided into various parts with different functions. Our physical movements are limited, connected and matched with the negative space we are in. However, what will happen if the in-between space of its original place is transformed into a solid entity and placed in another alien space?

The artist used gypsum gauze to cast part of the doors of her closet in China to create a series of works. Remaining the doors at the position of slightly open and making the casts of the gaps in between, she transformed the negative space into the solid sculptures. Through locating both of the artwork in the new house that her family will move in a few months, the dislocation and mismatch of the negative space was discussed.
